Emma Fischer is a Brooklyn based interdisciplinary artist who primarily works with glass, metal and wax for sculptural and jewelry applications. Their artistic process is focused on illuminating the gaps that exist between our realities (present and future), truths (visible and abstract), and perceptions (individual and communal). With a deep appreciation for the fantastic and absurd, Fischer often draws on mystic imagery and inspiration for their works. Their art starts, and usually ends, with the following question: What can we pull from the looking glass of our collective future to make this reality more beautiful or comprehensible?

“Sharing a smoke outside the queer bar sometimes feels like a holy act, bringing community together with circus-like frivolity to gift its members connection and dreams. This piece was born in circles outside of my local queer bar, as we discussed everything from our grand futures to the silly accessories we hoped to have once we got there. Queer flourishing is engaging in collective queer imagination, whether it be for our very existence or just the nature of our future smokes. To dream of a future is to internalize that it will exist and slowly move towards that reality.”

How does your work relate to the theme of flourish(ing)?

“Sharing a smoke outside the queer bar sometimes feels like a holy act. Whether it’s the deed itself, the setting, or the inebriation of those involved, the result is a circle of people enjoying a shared, simple pleasure while entering into conversations that seemed impossible just moments before. A smoke circle outside the bar holds the powers of a communal conversation circle with the frivolousness of a circus, a dichotomy that produces the amazing effect of no one taking themselves too seriously and, as a result, very raw expression. At times, this moment descends into mutual commiseration; a recognition of all the pain, problems and fears that consume us when we step away from this hallowed ground. In other moments, the circle becomes a sounding board for our grandest and silliest fantasies. This piece was born out of time spent smoking outside Cubbyhole on their trans nights, discussing everything from our wildest aspirations for the future to the silly little accessories we hoped to have once we got there (like a sexy cigarette holder). Queer flourishing is engaging in collective queer imagination, whether that be for grand future plans or even for something as simple as the nature of our future smoke sessions. Queer flourishing begins with dreaming alongside your community members about the future and what it could look like, regardless of the magnitude of importance. Perhaps even in defiance of the magnitude of importance, for achieving our smallest, silliest dreams allows us to believe in bigger dreams that we cannot yet see the road to. I view this piece as being born from this energy of collective imagination and an acknowledgement that, while I cannot deliver my community out of this hellscape we find ourselves in, I will never stop thinking of ways to effectuate the dreams I hear echoed in these circles. To dream of a future is to internalize that the future will exist, such that by our very wills we can imagine our (silly or serious) future into existence.”

How does your creative practice allow you to flourish (grow, thrive, blossom)?

”My creative process has always been geared towards pulling what I want to see in a beautiful future into the present. But that identification of what a beautiful future is, what it means, is deeply intertwined with the imagination of my community and what they see as a beautiful future. The collective imagination of queerness, so incredibly rich and varied, serves as the basis for my hopes of the future and provides me with roadmaps for how to blossom in a world with so much hate and prejudice built in. My imaginative force is tied to that of a community that grows, like nature, in storied defiance of all those who would wish to harm it. The resilience and endless dreaming of a more positive outcome that can be found in the queer community energizes me and shapes the ways I continue to blossom.

The interdisciplinary nature of my work also forces my artistic skills to be constantly growing and expanding. By spreading my time across several different physical mediums, I am frequently reevaluating the rules and techniques of one medium against the similarities and differences of others. When an artist is constantly evaluating how skills from 2 separate tracks tie together, growing outside of the box to connect those 2 tracks becomes almost inevitable. This approach to art, besides forcing frequent growth, has helped me internalize the interconnected nature of our reality and how it constantly evolves.”

As a queer+ artist, what would you like to see and/or what do you need in order to flourish during this time?

“Community and collective imagination is the basis for all of my creative endeavors, as dreams of a beautiful future shift into plans for how to effectuate such a reality. I would like to see my community have more space to work on that collective imagination, forums for public gathering and connection. To grow and blossom towards a beautiful future, one must first be able to visualize and believe in one. Hope is hard to maintain in times as difficult as these, but even in the darkest moments connecting with others allows you to craft and tailor that vision. The queer community has historically lacked 3rd spaces for community building due to the structural inequalities of our world, instead relying on bars, bookstores, and other commercial endeavors as substitutes for true 3rd spaces. I hope to see more unique endeavors for free public spaces that cater to queer people.”
