Peri Jayne, BFA Jewelry and Metalsmithing candidate at MassArt, transforms metals and organic materials into intimate stories of connection between humans, nature, and memory.

“I work with metals and organic materials—leather, fur, and more—to explore the delicate bonds between ourselves, each other, and the natural world. Guided by animals, my hands create pieces that invite touch and awaken quiet connection. Through the whispers of mammals, I seek to nurture spirit, memory, and the invisible threads that weave us into the living world.”

How does your work relate to the theme of flourish(ing)?

“In Release I bare my neck to the world. May this world do what it must in return. I made this work shortly after a long spout of grief, illness, and externality. Vulnerability inspires flourishment, accpeting ones self in an unconditional manner. When I face myself head on I flourish. Releasing long calloused ways of thought. Radical self acception opened up my petals, alluminating every moment previously consiealed.

In Linkage System, each link holds tight to the next, guiding each piece to the bordering. This piece involved the use of multiple new techniques and materials to my practice. By combing ancient methods with modern technologies, I blossomed a newfound love of each."

How does your creative practice allow you to flourish (grow, thrive, blossom)?

“Without my practice my lungs would collapse, my heart would go with it, smoothered by the weight or this world. My practice is my life line, my sun, my rain. It keeps me nourished, keeps me playful, keeps me active. I am able to explore who I am and where I belong.”

As a queer+ artist, what would you like to see and/or what do you need in order to flourish during this time?

“N/A”

“I need community. The world is extrodinarliy loud. There is fear, heartache, and bloodshed on our screens and on our streets. Everything is deeply personal and my body responds with aches that spread from braids to ankles. Moments of community remind me of the good that exists within us, it keeps me hopeful, it keeps my fire lit.”

Anything else you would like to share about this work? This can be an important part of the process, sourcing materials, or research.
